Quick Answer

A negative factual review is not backbiting. A business review is a public service, not the exposure of a private sin. It is part of accepted norms of commerce.

The Question — 1:00:53

I went to a restaurant and I did not like the food, but the owner is a Muslim. So if I leave a negative review, is that backbiting?

Let's finish off with this one. This is a good question. Is it backbiting to leave a negative review of a Muslim restaurant?

The Ruling — 1:01:30

It will not be backbiting. And why? This is not the honor of a Muslim. This is a public service. This is not a private sin. This is not between him and Allah.

This is a public service. And in the game of restaurants, everybody knows this is what they have to do. Not just restaurants — any business. You can log on to any Google website, whatnot, and review the restaurant or the business.

So don't worry. You may leave a negative review. Be factual. Leave exactly what happened. And this is not something that is sinful in the eyes of Allah.
