The Question: How to Distinguish Jinn from Mental Illness? — 57:35
A questioner asks: what is the line between psychology / mental health disorders such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia versus jinn, evil magic, etc.? How can we diagnose mental disorders in the context of Islamic belief?
The Default: Assume Natural Causes — 58:00
As a default — and I have said this multiple times — do not presume that you have something supernatural bothering you. Ninety percent of the time, ninety-five percent, ninety-nine percent of the time, there is nothing supernatural involved. As a default, it is a natural issue.
I speak as a person who knows the effects of these types of things — as someone trained in this area, and as someone who has spoken with experts far better than me. I have done a two or three-part interview series at Epic Masjid titled something like "Interview with the Jinn Experts" — I recommend listening to that. The expert featured has done thousands of cases of ruqyah and he says exactly what I am telling you: 95% of the time when the person thinks it is jinn or magic, it is not. It is a problem of their own imagination.
Do Not Jump to Supernatural Explanations — 58:55
As a default, do not jump to jinn, sihr, or black magic as your explanation. If there are symptoms that are atypical — and I do not want to list them here because if I say them, everyone will start reading those symptoms into their own lives — but symptoms that are clearly not normal, then it makes sense to think: maybe I need to get ruqyah done.
Otherwise, as a default: schizophrenia, multiple personality disorder, depression — all of these things have natural causes — whether it is your DNA, hormonal imbalance, the stress of life, or simply an inability to cope. These are completely natural.
Some Cases Are Jinn-Related — 59:35
Now, are some mental disorders jinn-related? Without a doubt — yes. But again, only some. A small percentage — 5–10%. That is not the default.
Doing Ruqyah on Yourself — 59:55
There is nothing wrong with doing ruqyah on yourself. The Prophet (SAW) did it on himself and taught us to do it on ourselves. Recite Surah al-Fatihah on yourself. Recite Ayat al-Kursi on yourself. Go to sleep listening to some Quran. It will help you. It will calm you down.
Now, if while listening to Quran you start noticing strange symptoms — okay, then maybe you need other types of consultation. But in general, you do not need to find a specialist just to do basic ruqyah. You can do it yourself.
An Experienced Raqi Can Usually Tell — 1:00:25
Generally speaking, an experienced specialist in ruqyah can detect whether the person in front of them has supernatural effects of jinn and black magic, or whether it is not related to that. It can be detected. It is not that difficult. Most of the time it is easy to determine. Very few times it becomes more convoluted.
I have done this myself many dozens of times and it is there — the difference is usually apparent. But I do not want to teach the general public these signs because that is not something good to teach openly, unless you want to take a class specifically on how to do ruqyah — that is a separate class altogether.
