The Question: Is Depending on Scholars Like the Catholic Church? — 39:31
A questioner says: scholars are revered because they have specialized — but hasn't this over-dependence on someone else to formulate and confirm opinions become similar to the old Catholic Church? Only groupthink is accepted and independent thinking is frowned upon. Isn't this antithetical to developing a personal spiritual relationship with God? Can we not connect with Allah and the Prophet without the supervision of experts?
Two Separate Things — 40:05
This is a very profound and deep question. Let me respond carefully.
To come closer to Allah, you do not need scholarship. You may pray, make dua, do your dhikr — and you do not need any clergy. But to understand the technicalities of Islamic theology and Islamic law, and the Quran — of course you need scholarship. The two are not the same.
Raw spirituality: you do not have to go confess your sins to a priest. You do not have to go inside a confessional box and ask the minister, the shaykh, the imam, how to have your sins forgiven. No — you do not need to do that. We are not Catholics. You do not need to go through clergy to reach Allah. Allah hears you directly. Pray to Him directly. Make dua to Him directly. Do your dhikr directly. Read the Quran directly. Open up your heart to Allah directly. You do not need any shaykh for that.
But if you have a question about Islamic law or Islamic theology, or about understanding the Quran — I am sorry, how can you answer without training? So if you do not trust a scholar, no problem. Become one. If you do not trust a scholar, go learn Arabic. Go memorize portions of the Quran. Go train yourself. Understand how to derive opinions and fatwas. Then do what you want. But to imagine that you can do so without the requisite training — that is just foolish.
The Analogy to Other Fields — 41:15
You would not do this in any other field. Why do you think it is allowed for your religion? You would not practice engineering, medicine, or architecture without training. There is an expertise. There is a way to become an expert. Do not conflate the two.
You do not need clergy to become pious. You do not need clergy to have your sins forgiven. You do not need clergy to feel the presence of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. You can do all of that directly. But you do need trained scholarship to answer the deeper questions — the nuances of theology, of law, of Quran. Do not conflate between the two.
The Grandmothers Had More Taqwa — 42:00
That having been said, there is a caveat: the more you understand intellectually, the more it will help you develop spiritually. But they are not necessary for each other. You can become spiritually very pious and powerful without studying much.
How many innocent Muslims around the world have never studied anything advanced and yet have strong iman in their hearts? Frankly — our grandmothers had more taqwa than most of us. Probably all of us. Our grandmothers who could not read and write — my grandmother could not read and write — they did not know the terminology, they did not know the academic vocabulary, but they had raw spirituality better than us.
They do not need a shaykh to connect with Allah. But if somebody were to go to my grandmother and ask her a fatwa, she would not give one — she would say: "Do not come to me. Go to the scholar." So understand the difference between the two.
Yes — we do need scholarship to understand the finer details of our religion. We do not need scholarship by and large to come closer to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
