The Serious Oath and How to Handle It — 0:18
Allah says in the Quran: Protect your oaths. (Surah al-Ma'idah 89). He says in another verse: Do not make Allah's name in your oaths a reason to avoid doing good. (Surah al-Baqarah 224) — Meaning: don't swear by Allah that you won't reconcile with your family, won't give to charity, etc.
The Context: A Common Scenario
Somebody, in a state of anger, says: "Wallahi, I will never visit that person's house again." They mean it. Then they calm down and realize reconciliation is better.
Scenario 1 — You see a better option: The Prophet (SAW) said in Bukhari and Muslim: If you swear by Allah, then you see the alternative is better — do the better option and make kaffarah for your oath. This is Allah's mercy. You are not trapped by your oath. Pursue the better choice (in this case, sulh — reconciliation), then pay kaffarah. There is no tawba required here because you are doing the better thing.
Scenario 2 — You simply cannot fulfill the oath: Life changed. Circumstances made it impossible. In this case you are 'ajiz (incapable). If it is truly beyond your control, there is no sin — but you must still make kaffarah. If you are falling short because of laziness or disinterest, then you need tawba plus kaffarah.
What Is the Kaffarah?
Allah details it in Surah al-Ma'idah, verse 89:
If you cannot afford any of the above:
Both options 1 and 2 are equally valid — you may choose either.
A Warning About Using Allah's Name
Muslims must be careful about invoking Allah's name casually:
- In some cultures, wallahi is used every few sentences. This is makruh — Allah's name should not be cheapened.
- In particular, do not swear by Allah in states of anger — especially in marital conflicts. A husband saying "Wallahi if you do this again I will divorce you" is problematic on multiple levels: it does not make for a healthy marriage, and you have unnecessarily invoked Allah's name.
- Ayyub (AS) made an oath in anger that he would strike someone 100 times. Allah gave him a merciful exit: strike them once with a bundle of 100 straws. This shows how Allah accommodates the human condition — but the lesson is to avoid putting yourself in such situations.
