Quick Answer

This is a long-standing theological controversy in Islamic scholarship with genuine disagreement going back to the second and third generations of Islam. Great scholars have held both positions, and entire treatises have been written on the topic. Yasir Qadhi says this is not a matter the average Muslim needs to dwell on — there is no practical benefit in discussing it publicly, and one should simply follow whichever position their teacher held without bearing ill feelings toward those who hold the other opinion.

The Question — 0:00

Brother Assaf emails saying that his entire life he believed the parents of the Prophet ﷺ are in Jannah. He recently came across a lecture in which the speaker said the opposite, and he is shaken to the core.

The Response — 0:56

Yasir Qadhi begins by appreciating the sentiment — the brother's distress comes from his love for the Prophet ﷺ and his love for the Prophet's parents, which is a sign of good faith.

The honest answer is that this is a theological controversy that goes back to the second and third generations of Islam. Great scholars have held both positions throughout Islamic history, and over a dozen dedicated books and treatises have been written specifically on this one topic alone.

This is not the time or place to go into who said what and why — the detailed discussion belongs in a specialized class for full-time students of Islamic knowledge.

Yasir Qadhi's Practical Advice — 2:00

What is the benefit of the average Muslim dwelling on this controversy? Whether they went to Jannah or not — what does it change in our own actions? What does it change in our iman? How does it affect our daily worship or our relationship with Allah?

For the public and for average Muslims, there is no benefit in discussing this matter — not in khutbahs, not in public Q&As, and not in informal conversations. Let the scholars discuss it among themselves at the appropriate academic level. Let full-time seminarians study it as part of a theology series.

Dear brother, you are disturbed and shaken. Yasir Qadhi says: don't worry about it. There are two positions. Great scholars held each of them. Follow whichever position your teacher taught you. Do not bear any ill feelings in your heart toward those who hold the other position.

In the next life, insha'Allah, we will know. But at that point, we will not be concerned with others — we will be concerned about our own standing before Allah. And Allah's judgment is fair, Allah's judgment is just, and He is the Most Merciful. Let it be. And Allah knows best.
