Is it heresy to question the hadith about Aisha's age at marriage? Can Muslims reject the narration saying she was 9?
Questioning the narration that Aisha was 9 at consummation is NOT heresy — it is a point of history, not theology. Both positions (accepting or questioning) have valid scholarly arguments within mainstream Islam. The narrator Hisham ibn Urwah never met Aisha and some hadith scholars note a mathematical discrepancy.
Theology & CreedDo Muslims need scholars or clergy to connect with Allah? Is depending on scholars like the Catholic Church?
Muslims do not need scholars to connect with Allah, make dua, or develop spirituality — Allah hears directly with no intermediary needed. However, understanding Islamic law and theology does require trained scholarship. These are two completely separate needs. Raw spirituality without formal study is entirely valid.
Theology & CreedDoes a practice having pagan origins make it haram for Muslims?
Pagan origins alone do not make a practice haram. What matters is the current cultural association, not the historical origin. If pagan connotation is gone, the practice is permissible.
Theology & CreedIs calling upon the dead (tawassul) considered shirk in Islam?
Only one school — the followers of Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab — categorically labels all invocation of the dead as automatic shirk. The majority of classical Sunni schools hold that the ruling depends on niyyah and paradigm. It only becomes shirk when the person believes the one being called possesses independent divine power.
Theology & CreedDo personal sins cancel out your good deeds on the Day of Judgment?
Personal sins between you and Allah do not wipe out your good deeds — both sit on opposite sides of the scale. Only sins that harm other people can destroy your good deeds, because the wronged person's rights can be compensated from your hasanat. This is the mechanism behind the famous hadith of the 'bankrupt person' on Judgment Day.
Theology & CreedWhat is Buraq and did it carry the Prophet during the Mi'raj to the heavens?
Buraq is a real physical animal used only for the Isra — the earthly journey from Mecca to Jerusalem. The Mi'raj (heavenly ascent) used a completely separate unknown instrument. Buraq was tied up at Masjid al-Aqsa while the Prophet ascended through the seven heavens. The common image of the Prophet riding Buraq into the heavens is a misconception.
Theology & CreedCan Islamic law (Sharia) accommodate different times and places?
Allah’s fixed rulings do not change, but where the Sharia is silent, urf (custom) and context shape application—major fiqh maxims affirm this.
Theology & CreedYasir Qadhi responds to online criticisms (Part 2 — with Imam Ibrahim Bakeer)
In this interview Yasir Qadhi addresses multiple allegations: how lay Muslims choose qualified scholars, his view on Ya’juj and Ma’juj and the weak hadith about the wall, the distinction between makruh handshakes without desire versus haram, and clarifies that “reform” refers to updating human fiqh applications—not changing Allah’s religion.
Theology & CreedYasir Qadhi responds to online criticisms (Part 1 — with Imam Ibrahim Bakeer)
Part 1 introduces the interviewer’s background, Yasir Qadhi’s willingness to correct himself when convinced, and a detailed explanation of what “aqida” means historically and why declaring someone “outside correct aqida” depends on which framework one adopts.
Theology & CreedWhat does the hadith about dying without an oath of allegiance (bay'a) mean today?
The bay'a hadith applies when a legitimate caliphate exists. Today, with no caliphate, the hadith is not applicable — 'fear Allah as much as you can.' The Quraysh condition was historically contingent and no longer operative according to many scholars. Avoid fringe movements that use this hadith to demand exclusive allegiance.
Theology & CreedWhat should a Muslim do when they have doubts about specific hadiths that conflict with modern science?
Doubting or rejecting specific hadiths based on sound scholarly methodology is within mainstream Sunni Islam and is not kufr. The certainties of faith are not threatened by questions about individual narrations. If a hadith seems problematic, first check if scholars disputed its authenticity, then check if your understanding is correct, then resort to tafwid (resigning its meaning to Allah). Never use minor data points to challenge major certainties.
Theology & CreedHow does one determine if a hadith is authentic?
Laypeople cannot verify hadith and must rely on scholars of hadith just as a patient relies on a doctor. Hadith in Bukhari and Muslim are generally authentic. Weak hadith may be acted upon for voluntary worship but not for establishing rulings of halal/haram or creed.
Theology & CreedCan a Muslim ask Allah for a personal miracle?
Asking Allah for what appears miraculous because you genuinely need it is the essence of iman. Asking for a miracle to prove Allah's existence or power carries an element of arrogance and is problematic — the miracles of existence itself and the Quran are already sufficient.
Theology & CreedDoes the Quran or Sunnah explain the phenomenon of Déjà Vu?
Islam has no explicit text addressing Déjà Vu, but the Islamic concept of the soul offers possible indirect explanations: souls may have interacted before birth in a pre-earthly existence, and the soul's nightly departure during sleep may embed subconscious memories. These are theories, not confirmed teachings.
Theology & CreedHow do we understand the hadith that says the gender of a baby is determined by which fluid overpowers the other?
The apparent conflict dissolves when you compare the Bukhari narration (Anas ibn Malik) against the Muslim narration (Tawban): the question was about child resemblance, not gender. The word 'sabaka' (overpowers/dominates) maps onto the modern genetics concept of dominant genes/alleles. Ibn Taymiyyah reached the same conclusion 800 years ago.
Theology & CreedAre a convert's good deeds from before Islam rewarded?
Yes. Based on the hadith of Hakim ibn Hizzam, the Prophet (SAW) said: "You have accepted Islam along with all of the good deeds that you have done." A convert receives a double blessing: all prior sins are wiped clean, and good deeds done before Islam are preserved as reward.
Theology & CreedDoes Allah love us unconditionally? Should Muslims say "God loves us"?
Allah is Al-Wadud (the Ever-Loving), but saying "God loves us unconditionally" is not the same as affirming Allah is loving by nature. The Quran challenges this claim. Allah specifies eight categories of people He loves and roughly a dozen He does not. The correct approach is to say "I want Allah's love" and "I hope Allah loves me" — categorically claiming "Allah loves me" is a sign of arrogance.
Theology & CreedHow can a Muslim enter Jannatul Firdous (the highest level of Paradise)?
Allah lists seven qualities of those who inherit Al-Firdous in Surah Al-Mu'minun: humility in prayer, avoiding useless speech, giving zakat, guarding private parts, faithfulness to trusts and pledges, and protecting prayers. Additionally, loving Allah and His Messenger is a path, and making constant sincere dua asking specifically for Al-Firdous.
Theology & CreedIf Allah loves His creation, why does He allow genocide and mass suffering?
There is no two-minute answer that removes all pain; Islam begins with humility before Allah’s wisdom.
Theology & CreedHow should a Muslim who experiences same-sex attraction protect their faith and dignity?
A desire by itself is not sinful; sin is in acting upon what Allah prohibited.
Theology & CreedIs meditation as commonly practiced today allowed in Islam?
Rituals that belong to another religion (postures, mantras tied to non-Islamic worship) are not permissible.
Theology & CreedAre the parents of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) in Jannah?
This is a genuine theological controversy with great scholars holding both opinions. Yasir Qadhi advises the average Muslim not to dwell on it, to follow whatever position their teacher taught, and to leave the judgment to Allah.
Theology & CreedDoes the Quran misunderstand the Christian Trinity? Is the Quran's description of Christian beliefs incorrect?
The Quran addresses the lived beliefs of Arab Christians of the 7th century, not abstract church councils. Academic research confirms Arab Christians of that era held near-tritheistic views. The Quran's terminology is therefore precise, not mistaken.
Theology & CreedWhy do Muslims debate who is in or out of Islam? How should we deal with sectarianism?
Defining what is and isn't correct Islamic belief is necessary. But judging an action as wrong is different from condemning the person. Non-mainstream Muslims who affirm the core tenets are within the fold of Islam even if their beliefs are problematic. We correct incorrect theology with wisdom while treating people with dignity.
Theology & CreedDoes the Quran's mention of 'white' and 'black' faces on Judgment Day have racial meaning?
The Quranic references to 'white' and 'black' faces on Judgment Day are Arabic idioms meaning radiant with joy vs. darkened with shame — they have no racial meaning whatsoever. Any translator who renders them as skin color has misunderstood or mistranslated the Arabic.
Theology & CreedDoes the hadith "la adwa" mean Islam denies that diseases are contagious?
The hadith 'la adwa' negates the pagan superstition that sickness transfers supernaturally from proximity alone — it does not deny natural disease transmission. Multiple other sahih hadith prove the Prophet ﷺ fully accepted physical contagion.
