Are movies and TV shows haram in Islam?

The blanket fatwa that movies are haram misuses the Quranic weight of the word haram, which Allah reserves for serious sins. Entertainment is not haram in itself. It becomes sinful when it involves explicit indecency or when it crowds out obligatory acts of worship like salah.
